Halloween Health Tips: How To Stick To Your Diet On October 31st
Halloween is a fun holiday for the kids, but it can be a tricky temptation as an adult when you’re on a diet. Here are some Halloween health tips to survive October 31st.
- Don’t say to yourself “I’ll only have one!” This never works – sugar is naturally addicting, so you can’t stop at one piece. Either say “I won’t be eating any candy this Halloween” or if you know you’re not going to be able to say no, plan out how much you’ll eat in advance (see tip #7).
- Don’t skip meals. You might be tempted to skip breakfast or lunch to “save” some calories for sweets, but this is one of the worst things you can do for your body. Eat your usual meals, including a healthy breakfast. Eat foods that are filling, like the Ideal Protein Rotini, so that you don’t feel hungry and turn to candy to fill you up.

- If you’re buying Halloween candy for the kids, buy it the day before. This will minimize temptations leading up to the big day. Keep it out of eyesight and immediate reach. - Trick-or-treat with the kids. This might sound contradictory, but you’ll get some built-in exercise. Walking around (or let’s face it, running after your kids) is a great way to stay active on Halloween. - If you’re going to a Halloween party, eat beforehand. It’s the oldest trick in the book, but it works. If you’re hungry, it will be much harder to resist the table full of sweet treats. Instead, pick up an Ideal Protein Meal Replacement.
- If you know you’re going to splurge, plan it out in advance. If you know you won’t have the willpower to say no to that Snickers bar, at least plan it out and be specific about what you’ll indulge in. Say to yourself in advance, “I will only eat two mini-Snickers bars and one Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.” Then stick to it. Don’t leave the whole bag of candy out. Instead, take out your exact portion and put the rest away.
- The day after Halloween, throw out (or donate) as much as you can. Your kids will be home with huge stacks of candy and that’s not good for you or for them. Throw out or donate as much as you can and only keep your family’s favorites. Then store the remaining candy in the freezer – there’s some truth to the saying “out of sight, out of mind.” Plus, waiting for the candy to defrost will force you to rethink whether or not you want those extra calories.
- If you mess up, don’t beat yourself up over it. Halloween can be a difficult time and a true test of your willpower, but if you give in to the temptations of sweets, don’t beat yourself up over it.
