How Often Should You Weigh Yourself?

How Often Should You Weigh Yourself?

Stepping on the scale can be a source for stress and self-loathing, but it doesn’t have to be. Try thinking of your scale as a compass, or as a tool to show you the direction of your weight loss. Weighing yourself too often can bring on unnecessary stress and anxiety that only make it harder to stay true to your diet. So how often should you weigh yourself then? First, here’s why you shouldn’t weigh yourself everyday:

It’s up and down all day long! Your weight is not consistent throughout the day and it can fluctuate for various reasons. One, you may be retaining water from too much sodium, or two, you may not have made your daily bowel movement yet. Things like these can affect your weight from morning till night. If you weigh yourself too often during the day, discouraging results create a negative outlook on your weight-loss efforts. Instead of stepping to the scales daily, take photo, or a body measurement, or judge yourself by how your clothes fit.

Tip: For an accurate reading, make sure the scales are on a solid surface (no carpet) like that of tile or wood.

Once a week should do it! You might be asking yourself, “If you don’t weigh yourself every day, then how often should you weigh yourself?” For best results, you should weigh yourself once a week on the same day, at the same time, on the same scale. Wear similar clothing each time you step on and record the number in your diet journal. The number on the scale will be the indicator for you to make adjustments or continue with your current regimen. Remember, even a half a pound lost is progress.

Tip: As a rule, the cheaper the scales, the less accurate they tend to be. Invest in a reliable and accurate set of scales to avoid disappointing results!

Procrastination is not the answer. Don’t wait until your annual trip to the doctor to weigh-in either. Your weight number is a total picture of your overall health, and it’s a good idea to keep track of it over the course of your diet. Confront the scale weekly, whether you want to or not. Your scale can reveal moderate or extreme changes, which you should always document in your journal and discuss with your diet coach or health care professional.

Tip: As a gentle reminder, make the weekly weigh-in a habit by calling it ‘Weigh-in Wednesday.’

So how often should you weigh yourself? Once a week should be good. Think of weighing yourself as a data collection mission for your body – without this information, you may be misinformed on your health, diet, and well being.
